Today is our last day as we are heading back to Cairns. It has been a wonderful trip and even when we get back to Cairns the trip will not be over for my friend and me. We have arranged to do a day trip to the Atherton Tablelands as well as a trip to Kuranda. We have also decided that on our free day before we head for home we will visit Green Island but all that is for anothe post. The highlight of todays trip is a Daintree River Cruise and a chance to see Saltwater Crocodiles in the wild. We had to catch a ferry across the Daintree River and as far as I know there are no plans for a bridge.
One of the things I loved about North Qld was the send of humour of the people who live there. It is remote and these people don't have the things we city dwellers take for granted. They can't pop in next door and borrow some milk for a cup of coffee. They are isolated and very much alone outside the tourist season. The toilets at the Daintree River is one example of this humour.
Cruising on the Daintree was a wonderful experience. The cruise operators used to feed chickens to the crocodiles so that the tourists were guaranteed a croc sighting. This practice has been banned and the operators have to cruise the river looking for them and ther is no guarantee that there will be a sighting. Fortunately we were lucky and saw two of them sleeping (???) at the edge of the river. Or perhaps they were just watching us and waiting for one of us to fall overboard.
We also saw a tree snake on a branch hanging out over the river but it blended in so well with the tree I was unable to photograph it. We also spotted a beautiful bright blue Kingfisher and a white heron.
Our cruise operator told us that the crocs were suspected of taking full grown beef cattle that graze along the river.
Our trip from here to Cairns was the most picturesque part of our trip as we made our way throught the rainforest over the mountain to Cairns.
If you are considering a trip to Cape York then don't wait, just do it. If I could I would do it all again. It was a wonderful trip and we enjoyed every minute of it.
