Cooktown
Cooktown came as a surprise to me. I had imagined a large bustling tourist resort and instead we drove into a picturesque, sleepy seaside village. Even though it had world class resort hotels it had none of the trappings of tourism. There were no shops selling trendy tourist items like stuffed Kangaroos and other toysand there were only a few shops along the main street. Some beautiful old buildings that have been lovingly maintained over the years. Cooktown is rich in history and was named after Captain Cook who landed there to repair his ship.
We stayed at the Sovereign Resort Hotel and this really was the lap of luxury, spacious rooms with every amenity, wonderful meals, including breakfast and top class service. After the bush camps this really was a welcome change. One of the places we visited was Natures PowerHouse located in Cooktowns Historical Botanic Gardens.
