Our bus took us to Bamaga to pick up supplies for our trip to the very tip of the Australian mainland and then back to Punsand Bay where we were spending the night.
Standing on the northern most tip of Cape York Peninsula was something I had always wanted to do. The bus could not get all the way to the tip and we walked from the bus, along the beach and then clambered over rocks to get to this point but it was well worth the effort required.
This was our first taste of the remoteness that the local people live with. The roads are rough and mostly dirt and corrugation with just a little bitumen in the few towns we passed through and even though it was June we found it quite hot.
Our accommodation was adequate and did have a shower and toilet ensuite in each tent but it was very basic. The Tent/cabins faced onto the beach but this is the home of salt water crocodiles so were reminded not to take a moonlight stroll along the beach.
Like the accommodation the meals were basic but none the less were very pleasant and tasty and we were very well fed. We quickly learned that in the far north life is simple and basic and there are no airs and graces. These people truly are the salt of the earth.
