Unneccesary Discomfort

Sometimes we women put up with a lot of unnecessary discomfort because we are too embarrassed to talk about it or we think nothing can be done about it. One of the most common things that women tend to put up with is incontinence. A little incontinence for a short time after the birth of your baby is normal and common but if the problem does not go away then you need to speak to your doctor.

A study of 4,000 women by Kaiser Permanent which was funded by the National Institute of Health revealed that 1 in 3 women have problems with incontinence. Other research shows that 11% of women end up having surgery for a pelvic floor disorder. It is important to consult your doctor as the problem may be able to be rectified without surgery.

There may be medication that you can take and I am sure your doctor will advise you about the correct way to do pelvic floor exercises and hopefully the need for surgery will never arise. If you are one of the 11% who needs surgery there have been advances in this procedure which makes it much less invasive and can be done with laporoscopic surgery.

Incontinence is an embarrassing discomfort and is not something you should just 'put up with', so visit your doctor and start getting advice and treatment now. Remember, like everything else, early treatment is always the wisest option.

Life Saving Drug

I have just been reading articles in Wall Street Journal and the New York Times about the vaccine from Merck, Gardasil, which is used to prevent cervical cancer and also gives partial protection against genital warts. The drug is being given to young girls up to the age of eighteen. The articles don't dwell so much on the life saving benefits of this drug as they do on the cost of the drug and the companys promotion of it.

The drug is given in three injections and costs around $360 (US). This is quite expensive and the Wall Street Journal has pointed out the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained while the New York Times dwells more on the marketing of the drug.

This drug has been a great breakthrough in the treatment of one type of cancer that has claimed the lives of many women and yet, instead of praising the drug and supporting it's use these articles seem to be nit picking about the cost involved and the marketing used. Yes it is expensive but is it as expensive as the treatment of a woman with cervical cancer? I doubt it very much, however no comparisons were made in the articles. As for the marketing; lets be thankful that information about the benefits of this drug have reached so many women even if it does mean that Merck is making money. Isn't that what drug companies do? Make money by selling medications that save lives?

When I see articles like these I have to wonder, would a drug that prevented prostate cancer be treated in the same way, or would it be accepted readily and praised for saving the lives of many men?

Break The Poverty Cycle

"Studies have shown that men, women and children from communities of need wait longer to seek care, have worse health outcomes and higher death rates in a given year than the general population."

This quote is from an article in News-Press.com in Florida and it makes me wonder why on earth they would have to do a study to find out what is already a patently obvious fact. They talk about 'Communities of need'. Why not say that poor, underprivileged people feel so disempowered by their poverty that they don't feel they can seek help when they need it. There was no need to waste money on a study to find this out. the money spent could have been used to give help to these people through their community health centres who are already doing their best to meet the need for health care in these communities.

The poverty cycle is almost impossible to break without intervention of some kind so why not stajavascript:void(0)
Publish Postrt with the children in these communities. Education is one of the best tools to breaking the poverty cycle, so ensure that these kids get a good education even if it means some government help.

We all need to take some responsibility for helping people who have reached a point where they can't help themselves because if we don't the problems that we have now will just simply grow.

Heart Health

We all know we need to take care of out heart but do we know how, that is the question. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and inactivity are all putting you at risk of heart disease.

So how do you prevent them? Get plenty of exercise to keep your weight down and reduce the risk of high blood pressure. a healthy, well balance diet which reduces your intake of saturated fats (animal fats) will also help keep your weight down. You also need to practice relaxation techniques to reduce your stress levels. Having a positive outlook on life also helps.

When you get out of bed in the morning do you groan and think, "Oh God, work again", or do you bounce out of that bed thinking "Wow, another great day ahead". This is the attitudes that either racks up your stress levels or keeps them down. Head talk is very important to your health and well being so learn to use positive head talk.

Get your doctor to check your cholesterol levels and explain to you what it all means. Taking care of your heart isn't all that hard and if you do you will stay healthy and enjoy life well into old age.

You Look 20% Better Than You Think

I read an article a few days ago that I just had to share with you. It said that we are 20% more attractive than we think we are. Wow! I look in the mirror now and think, "OK, that's pretty ordinary, BUT, I am 20% better looking than that" and this makes me feel really good.

So the next time you look in the mirror, remember, what other people see is 20% better than what you think you see. It is actually true that we are our own worst critic. I wonder though what people like Angelina Jolie see when they look at themselves. do they see themselves as being unattractive? Who knows and who cares because we are better looking than we thought we were and that is all that really matters.

AIDS and You

I don't want to be a spoil sport or anything but did you know that in the US new estimates show that at least 56,000 people become infected with AIDS each year. This is 40% more that previous calculations. That is really scary for anyone who has teenagers or who is sexually active themselves.

When AIDS first appeared we were bombarded with information about safe sex and how easily you could become infected. Now there is very little publicity on the subject and people have become complacent. They know AIDS and other STD's are out there but even though the treatment for AIDS has been improved, there is still no cure. If you get infected, you stay infected and we seem to have forgotten just how easily we can become infected. Worldwide there are 33 million people infected with the immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS and, despite having better ways of treating the disease, 2 million die with it every year.

So what do you do? Teach your children about AIDS and safe sex and always use a condom yourself. Never have unsafe sex with anyone until they have been checked and cleared by their doctor and expect to have the same demands made on yourself. Maybe someday they will find a cure but until then take precautions.
