Visit Korea With Elliot

I am one of those people who like to observe other people. I guess it has something to do with the fact that I am a writer. Sometimes I sit in a coffee shop and watch how people at other tables interact with each other and I try and guess about their relationship to each other. Some who are elderly and have been together a long time have very little to say to each other while a young couple whose relationship is new chatter to each other and there is no silence between them. I guess that is why I enjoy reading exchange student

It is written by Elliot who is a senior student at the University of the Philippines. Elliot was also an exchange student at Daejeon University, South Korea and he writes about his time there. For me it is like sitting in that coffee shop and watching the relationships and interactions between Elliot and the people he meets in Korea.

He writes about the people and the country and his experiences take you to Korea. Elliot descriptions are wonderfully vivid and beautifully written. If you want to know what it is like in Korea then you should read exchange student.

Healthy Skin Protects You

Taking care of your skin is important, not just for looking good but also for health reasons. Our skin is there to protect us against infections and we need to ensure that it is healthy. Any opening, such as a cut in or even a pinprick, in your skin can allow bacteria to invade your body.

If you have ever had Cellulitis(a skin infection) you got it from a break in your body's protective barrier, your skin. Skin isn't just there to let people know our age and caring for it is not just to keep it looking young. So, how do you take care of your skin? The first step is to find out what skin type you are. The second step is find the right products for your skin type.

The first product you should get is a good sunscreen that has a SPF of 15 or more and you should use it every day. You should wash you skin gently in warm water. Hot water removes the natural oils and so do long showers, so make it a policy to take short showers. Use a mild soap. Natural products, not chemical products are always the best. You also need to moisturise regularly. When shaving be careful. One small nick can let that bacteria in.

Last, but not least, don't smoke. Smoking causes your skin to age prematurely and aged skin is thin and breaks easily. Smoking constricts the tiny blood vessel that carry oxygen to the skin and keeps it healthy.

Taking care of your skin is not rocket science. Just set up your regular routine and stick to it for healthy skin that will protect you.

What Do You Wear

Are you one of those women that never quite knows what looks good on you? I am and I struggle hopelessly with fashion. Is what I like right for my body type, does this color suit me and on and on until usually I decide not to buy anything. I spend my life in slacks, wondering if my bum looks big in this.

So what made a difference for me? I started looking through magazines at the way some celebrities dress. Oh Wow!!! Is it that they don't have any dress sense or is that they think because they are rich and famous they can get away with anything? Some of those ladies do not look good.

That's when I realised I am not alone in my lack of any insight into what suits me and what doesn't. If you go into a dress shop and try something on the sales person will tell you how great it looks on you but you know that you can't really believe them because their only interest is making a sale. So, what do you do?

I have made a resolution today, if it feels good and comfortable and I think it looks nice I will go for it. I'm not one of those women who has their bum and boobs hanging out so how much trouble can I get into it. My advice is, just go for it.

New Test For Ovarian Cancer

Most women are aware that ovarian cancer is often not diagnosed in the early stages when it is most treatable. If you have symptoms of changes in urine production, gas production, bowel movements, indigestion, or weight in addition to pelvic pain, feeling of fullness or painful intercourse you should consult your doctor who will probably arrange an examination.

It has been found that the CA125 blood test is not completely reliable. For this reason there has been a search for a new test to diagnose ovarian cancer has been undertaken. The new test called OvaCheck is now being tested and is believed to be far more reliable. The manufacturer of OvaCheck say that it is more reliable in detecting stage one ovarian cancer which is the early stage of the cancer. The test can be done with a simple finger prick blood test like the test used by diabetics.

We are slowly beating breast cancer because of improved drugs and early detection. We are able to immunise young women against uterine cancer so let's us hope that OvaCheck will save many more women by the early detection of ovarian cancer.

Losing Weight

Are you struggling with losing weight? It seems that almost every woman I meet is on a diet, the only thing that varies is the type of diet she is on. Why is this? According to the American Obesity Association approximately 30% of women are obese and 60% overweight. These women are struggling to reach and maintain their ideal body weight and the struggle leaves them lacking in self confidence when they fail to achieve their goal.

The effects of obesity on health are well known. These women know they are at risk of Hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, back pain, infertility and even some cancers so they know how important it is to lose weight. The problem is many women embark on crash diets that don't help in the long term and are often not healthy, so what is the best way to lose weight?

It is very important to follow a healthy eating plan if you want to reach your goal weight. It is important to eat three meals every day. Breakfast is the most important meal to eat. If you eat three healthy meals a day you will be less likely to snack in between meals of let yourself get so hungry you overeat.

To lose weight you need to eat ten servings of vegetables or fruit a day. You also need to eat lean protein with every meal. When you eat sweets your body begins to crave more sugar and for this reason it is important to stop eating sweets for a couple of weeks to stop those cravings.
You must also drink water, at least six to eight glasses a day.

Aerobic exercise is important for your cardiovasuclar system is exercising using weights helps maintain bone density and prevent Osteoporosis as well as building muscles that will support your joints. Good stomach muscles will prevent back pain. Exercise has also been found to be beneficial for people who are depressed.

Many people when they are stressed head straight for the comfort food and so minimizing stress and getting plenty of sleep will help you beat the battle of snacking without putting a dead bolt on your fridge.

Losing weight means changing your lifestyle and even though this may seem daunting it is possible and as you see your body weight going down and feel your fitness levels improving you will find self esteem rising and you will realise that you to can have a long and healthy life.

What Men Want

How important is it for a woman to be attractive? Is it important to their career or their relationships? I believe it is far more important for a woman to be confident about herself and to accept that looks really have nothing to do with what kind of person or employee she is.

Men are always attracted first to an attractive woman but this attraction often does not blossom into any more than a passing fancy. If the woman is self centered and selfish, or has little else going for them the men quickly lose interest. It may be beauty that attracts a man but it is personality that keeps him.

How often do we tell little girls how pretty they are? No wonder they grow up into women who think that their looks will carry them through life. No one ever thinks about the girls who are not so pretty. They are the wall flowers at the school dance when they are teenagers. No self centered teenage boy wants to be seen dancing with a plain girl. Thank goodness they grow out of that phase.

If your features are less than perfect then just remember you are one of the majority of women and the majority of those women are happily married to men who adore them, have done well in her chosen profession and are wonderful mothers. They are highly thought of by their friends and families and no one ever thinks of them as anything other than a wonderful woman.

Beauty is only skin deep and it is what is inside that skin that really counts and any intelligent man is well aware of this, so if you are less than perfect, don't worry. If that is the worst handicap you have in life you have nothing to worry about.

Pushing Forty

We women worry about some of the silliest things. I used to worry about getting old. As every birthday grew near I would find myself getting depressed. When my 40th birthday loomed like a huge milestone ( or should I say millstone). That is when I realised, enough is enough. Birthdays are meant to be fun not to be dreaded so I sat down and wrote a poem and then went out and bought gifts for my family.

The poem was not something that would make Shakespeare feel inadequate but I thought, if you are turning forty and not feeling good about it, it may just help you laugh about it.

Pushing Forty

She is feeling very faded
And decidedly quite faded
For soon she will have a birthday
They she hopes they will forget

When a woman's pushing forty
She can really get quite haughty
And if you remind her of her birthday
You deserve all that you get.

So to avoid any trouble
Better leave home on the double
If you dare to remind her
Of all the years she left behind.

Just say she's looking better
Than the first time that you met her
An the smile she will give you
will surely blow your mind

Seeing Eye To Eye

Of all our senses I think sight would be the worst to lose. Imagine walking around in permanent darkness or never seeing much more than a blur. There are steps you can take to make sure your eyes stay healthy.

Seeing an Optometrist every year for a check up is the first step. If the pressure in your eyes is above normal you could be at risk of developing Glaucoma and your Optometrist will refer you to an eye specialist.

If you maintain a healthy weight with a good, nutritious diet that is low in fat and salt and get plenty of exercise you could eliminate many of the health problems that can affect your eyes. You are less likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or to develop diabetes. All these illnesses can cause you to have problems with your eyes. These illnesses can all lead to hemorrhages behind you eyes which can cause diminished sight at best and blindness at worst so taking care of yourself is vital.

Always wear good quality sunglasses when you are out in the sun to protect your eyes from the damaging UV rays. If you notice any change in your vision or have any problems with your eyes get it checked immediately. Your sight is precious and you don't want to lose it.

The Church and Sexual Abuse

With the imminent arrival of Pope Benedict in Australia the issue of pedophilia within the Catholic church has been raised once again. The Pope is being asked to publicly apologise to the victims of abuse as he did when he visited Washington in April.

The instance of sexual abuse within all denominations is worrying. We send our children to church believing this is a safe place but then we find that is not. The problem of pedophilia is in schools, kindergartens, churches and everywhere children are likely to be found. This of course is no accident. Pedophiles choose to work in areas that bring them in contact with children.

It is one thing for the Pope to promise to remove this problem from the priesthood but quite another one to actually do it. The church has been accused of covering up incidents of abuse within the church and Broken Rites which is a group that represents the victims of abuse say that it's list of 107 convictions for church abuse represents only a small percentage of the actual number of cases.

All churches must name and shame those of the clergy who commit these shameful crimes against the innocent victims who have been brought up to respect and trust them. This is the only way to eradicate this kind of behaviour in the church. When this is done and the courts are given the power to sentence them for life without parole we may be able to feel hope that our children will be safe.

How Is Your Time Management

How is your time management? Are you always running late? Does time get away on you? That was me until I discovered a few ways to manage my time better and now I am always on time and I have managed to factor in a little time for myself. I don't hit the floor running every morning and I am not still chewing my last bit of toast as I run after the bus for work and I feel very proud of myself.

The first thing I did was write a list of all the things I had to do and then I sorted the list into days. First there were the things I had to do everyday like feed the cat and the kids, shower, bath the babes etc. The rest like washing, ironing, vacuuming, I put into different days. Now I do what is on my list for each day and I find my house is tidy and my cat stays at home, my children are in bed on time and even I have some free time to myself every evening.

After writing out my list it was very easy to establish routines and habits. Having well established routines at home had a flow on affect; I found my children were much easier to manage. They knew their meals times, their bed times etc and I found that children adapt well to routines. If you always put your things in the same place you eliminate wasting time looking for your car keys, handbag and so on and you also eliminate the panic that goes with it, so establish a place for everything and everything in it's place system.

It is important to take care of yourself. If you spend your life rushing, gulping down your food and often not taking the time to eat properly your immune system will not work as well and you will find yourself getting every bug that comes along. Once you are not feeling well your routines and lists stop working so, for this reason, it is important to stay healthy. Eat properly with plenty of fruit and veges and drink at least eight glasses of water a day. It really isn't that hard to do.

With all these things in place I now have time to do things for myself. This is my reward for organising my life and I enjoy that time to the fullest, it re-energises me and I can meet the challenges of home, family and work calmly and without the stress that was once a big part of my life.

Appreciate Yourself First

Women have many roles and responsibilities in their lives. You are a mother, daughter, friend, leader, co-worker, wife, partner, volunteer, financial expert, homemaker, caregiver and more - all at the same time. All of these responsibilities and multitasking contributes to feeling overwhelmed. That's why it is critical for women to take time the time to value themselves and all the things they do. Taking some time every day to value what you do helps you to do a better job in all the other areas of your life. It also makes you feel good about yourself!

There are many different ways you could value yourself. One of the ways to do this is to build your self-confidence. Confidence is the belief you have in your ability to reach your goals. Women who are emotionally well have a strong belief that they are able to succeed.

Here are three ways you can feel more confident:

• Doing what you do best: Place your focus on the things you do well (i.e., knitting, sewing, quilting, etc.). If you can't identify what you do well, ask your friends, families and colleagues. Once you identify the things you do well, begin to focus more time on those things and congratulate yourself (give yourself a high-five, pat yourself on the back) when you have accomplished something. This will contribute to more self-confidence.

• Watch others do what you want to do: Seeing someone like yourself succeed will help you believe that you can do it, too. If there is something you have always wanted to do but you are not sure how you can do it, then find another woman who is doing it. Ask her how she does it, ask for tips and suggestions.

• Make use of your emotions: If you have a hard time starting something, use your emotions to help you take action. Recognize that it's okay to be afraid, nervous or excited about something new. Accept those feelings and use them to help you get going.

Here are some tips to increase your self-confidence:

• Don't Compare: Your abilities and talents are uniquely yours and special. Everyone has different goals in life and ways of thinking about what accomplishment means. Decide what success means for you. What success means for your neighbor is uniquely theirs to achieve.

• Focus on past successes: Think about the times when you have made a difference in some one's day.Think about the times you made someone smile or helped them get through a difficult situation. Give yourself credit for the good things you do for others every day.

• Learn from your mistakes: We all make mistakes. The best use of your energy and time is to learn what went wrong without dwelling on it.

Remember, it will take time and work to make changes. You will have both successes and setbacks along the way. However, be gentle with yourself and keep working at it, you will see improvements over time.
